Operations Director Recipient of Rudy Perpich Award



The DECC is delighted to announce Joe Tarnowski, DECC Director of Operations, is a 2019 recipient of the Rudy Perpich Public Service Award. The recognition was presented by Grandma’s Marathon and given annually to public employees or elected officials who have exhibited dedication and service to the event. The 14th annual celebratory breakfast was held on Thursday, June 20, 2019.

Joe Tarnowski is recognized for his longtime contribution to Grandma’s Marathon communications.

Joe has been involved with Grandma’s Marathon as an integral part of the communications team. His primary role throughout the weekend is radio operator. Joe steps in as a liaison to law enforcement, medical personnel, and race organizers and participants, working directly with the Duluth Police Department and other emergency response teams. His  experience in radio communication allows a quick response to anyone requiring aid. In addition, Joe lead the initiative to create an amateur radio spot at the DECC to utilize for special events and emergencies.

The 14th Annual Rudy Perpich Public Service Award Breakfast was the first of many events held during Grandma’s Marathon weekend, presented by Members Cooperative Credit Union and Toyota.
