Summary/Objective
The Staff Accountant will perform accounting tasks such as preparing financial reports to track assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, ongoing maintenance, entries of the DECC’s general ledger, bank reconciliation, and other related tasks as assigned by the Finance Director. In addition, they will participate in setting financial standards for the organization and finding ways to improve efficiency.

 

Requirements and Competencies

  • 5+ years of general accounting experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field required.
  • Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
  • Proficient with accounting software.
  • Understanding of general accounting principles within accounts receivable (AR) and accounts payable (AP) functions
  • Able to manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, in particular, expertise with Excel.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of event management software, in particular, Ungerboeck/Momentous.
  • Expertise with accounting software operations.

  • Analyze financial information and produce error-free accounting reports.
  • Perform general cost accounting and other related duties for the DECC.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
  • Maintain the general ledger.
  • Code invoices, set up new accounts, reconcile accounts, and close the monthly books.
  • Reconcile bank accounts at least monthly, verify deposits, address inquiries from banks.
  • Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verify and/or complete payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensure payments are charged to appropriate accounts.
  • Provide outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
  • File tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
  • Manage the purchasing and invoicing system.
  • Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Review and recommend modifications and efficiencies to accounting systems and procedures.
  • Participate in setting and maintaining the appropriate financial standards for the organization.
  • Assist with creating and providing forecasting processes and procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Schedule

This position is full-time, estimated to work 40 hours per week, majority of hours will be 8:00am-4:30pm with an occasional need for a shift outside of regular working hours.

Physical Demands and the Work Environment
Most work is conducted in the Finance Office at the DECC, in a typical office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. There will be prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Successful completion of reference checks.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements
The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s).
The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources.

This position is at will. This means if you are offered the position and accept, your employment with the DECC is for an indefinite period and it is subject to termination by you or the DECC, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time.
