The Sales Desk Attendant is one of the first faces guests and exhibitors see as they enter the DECC and should present a professional and welcoming demeanor.  The Sales Desk Attendant will work run any convention hall sales desk shifts as well as serve as an RV parking registration sales desk operator.  They will assist event organizers by greeting guests, directing them to their event, and answering any questions they may have.  They also coordinate exhibitor orders to ensure booths are ready for opening.  They will perform various tasks, including light cleaning, as directed based on event, and oversee events to ensure they are running smoothly.

This position is part-time with a schedule based on DECC event needs.  This position will have day, afternoon, and/or evening shifts scheduled on various days of the week, and may include some holidays.  Sales Desk shifts vary based on events, and may begin very early in the morning.  Approximately 5-30 hours per month.  The DECC cannot always schedule a definite ending time due to the nature of the events, but an estimated time may be provided.

The DECC will provide polos or t-shirts with the DECC logo. Business casual dress is required.

Essential Functions (Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.)

  • Remain highly visible and approachable during events to assist patrons
  • Work as a team with other Building Services staff and Sales Desk Attendants, as well as other departments, to perform duties in the most professional manner possible or independently for smaller events
  • Answer questions and take exhibitor booth and parking orders for equipment, electrical needs, and set up supplies
  • Operate a Point of Sale (POS) for payments with some cash handling
  • Distribute exhibitor materials and parking passes
  • Assist team and/or other departments with tasks, including light cleaning, moving chairs or signage, and other event related functions
  • Maintain security by being aware of event surroundings and allow authorized access only
  • Make radio calls to communicate with other departments
  • Communicate with the Duluth Police Department and/or security as needed
  • Manage difficult or emotional customer situations and respond quickly and courteously to requests for service or assistance

Supervisory Responsibilities

Work Environment
The Sales Desk Attendant will be in varying work spaces based on the needs of each event.  The noise level in the work environment may be moderately quiet, but may also be very loud.  Earplugs are available for extremely loud events.  The responsibilities and pace will vary and the Sales Desk Attendant will need to adapt quickly.

Physical Demands
The Sales Desk Attendant should be able to communicate with other DECC employees and guests and may often use a radio.  They will be regularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, talk and hear.  When working the Sales Desk, they will be seated for hours at a time in the exhibitor area.

Travel Required

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) OR one to three months related experience or training

Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2+ years of customer service-related experience

 Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Successful completion of reference checks
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable

Work Authorization and Security Clearance Requirements
The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s).
The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources.

At-Will Employment
This position is at will. This means if you are offered the position and accept, your employment with the DECC is for an indefinite period of time and it is subject to termination by you or the DECC, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time. Nothing in this job description or any other policy of the DECC shall be interpreted to be in conflict with or to eliminate or modify in any way, the at will employment status of this position.

The at will employment status of an employee of the DECC may be modified only in a written employment agreement with that employee which is signed by the Executive Director or the Chair of the DECC Board of Directors.
