full-time JOB AT THE DECC Ice/Grounds Foreperson Summary Title Ice/Grounds Foreperson FLSA Classification Non-Exempt Type of Position Full-Time Type of Employment Collective Bargaining Agreement Hourly Wage Per Union Contract, starts at $21.75 Additional $1.25 per hour certification pay available Department Building Maintenance Reports to Director of Building Maintenance Date of Last Revision 07/27/2021 Summary/Objective The Ice/Grounds Foreperson administers and executes all aspects of ice-making within the DECC complex. They are responsible for maintaining ice-making equipment, scheduling ice times, scheduling personnel, making and maintaining ice, and working with the public, high schools, and colleges. They will make purchasing decisions for the Ice Maintenance Department and lead all aspects of groundskeeping and projects under the direction of the Building Maintenance Director during non-ice season. Membership in MIAMA. Schedule Shifts vary depending on event. A person in this position works approximately 40 hours per week. An event driven schedule is required which will include days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally holidays. An average shift is 8 hours per day, and shifts have lasted as long as 14 hours. The DECC cannot always schedule a definite ending time due to the nature of the events, but an estimated time may be provided. Uniform The DECC will provide uniforms as determined by the current labor agreement. Essential Functions (Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.) Repair and maintain ice and grounds equipment throughout the year. This includes: zamboni, plow trucks, forklifts, plus additional equipment Keep up to date on ice scheduling and make adjustments to personnel as needed Hire, train, and schedule ice and grounds schedule under the guidance of the Building Maintenance Director. Crew size may fluctuate but 6 – 12 staff members is typical Operate all ice and grounds equipment, ranging from zamboni, forklift, pallet jack, plow truck, lawn mower, etc. Work with clients and the public face-to-face to ensure operations run smoothly Coordinate groundskeeping schedule and work with the crew to maintain a clean and well-manicured campus lawn and parking lot Assist team and/or other departments with tasks, including light cleaning, moving chairs or signage, and other event related functions Monitor inventory and prepare supply orders, based on upcoming event needs Execute outdoor event set up and turnover. This includes setting up and tearing down events within Bayfront Festival Park Create and maintain a professional and hospitable appearance and atmosphere Follow health and safety protocols and ensure staff is also following procedures Competencies Ensure a high level of customer service Ability to adapt to changes, delays, or unexpected events Ability to resolve problems and manage difficult situations as needed Ability to move quickly throughout the complex when an event(s) is located in multiple areas of the building Excellent organizational and time management skills Supervisory Responsibilities The Ice/Grounds Foreperson hire, train, and supervise the ice and grounds staff as well as occasionally lead the entirety of the building maintenance department when required. Scheduling and payroll will also be a function of the position. Work Environment Some work is performed indoors and outdoors. Environment can range from cold and wet, to hot, humid, and anything in between. Safety gear will be required for tasks such as grinding, drilling, hooking up propane tanks. Exposed to loud noise regularly, including machinery, pep bands, crowds, and lawn equipment. The pace will vary and the Ice/Grounds Foreperson will need to adapt quickly. Physical Demands Roughly equal amounts of sitting, standing and walking. Required to ascend at least 15’ and at times up to 40’ on a ladder or scissors-lift. Climb, crawl and work in awkward or cramped positions. Required to drive Zamboni. Must regularly lift and move objects or loads weighing up to 60 pounds (such as propane tanks or Zamboni tires). This position will require someone that is able to stand on their feet for many hours at a time, moving quickly to different places based on needs. The Ice/Grounds Foreperson will need to use their hands frequently, and be able to see, hear, and speak often. Travel Required No Required Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Mechanical experience General computer experience 2+ years supervisory experience Class C Driver’s License Preferred Education and Experience Ice maintenance certification Forklift experience/certification 2+ years of ice arena supervisory experience Additional Eligibility Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older. Successful completion of reference checks Successful completion of a background check Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s). The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources.
