Coleridge -Taylor & Sibelius

In 2023 we celebrate Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday. What better way to start the new year than with his fabulous The Rock, a symphonic poem that describes the events of a storm ridden Christmas Eve. It’s a perfect opener for Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Othello Suite, based on Shakespeare’s famous play. We close this night of tempestuous music with Sibelius’ masterwork, his Symphony No.5. The finale features the famous “swan theme”: music that was inspired by an encounter with a wedge of swans flying above Sibelius. This truly is music that goes beyond what words can express. It’s music that is simply glorious.
