Meet our 2019 Wellness Intern, Bridget

The DECC Wellness Program offers one student each year an internship to drive wellness benefits for DECC employees. Meet Bridget. College senior, adventurer, Duluth-native, new mama, and our fall 2019 DECC Wellness Intern. As a Public Health major, Bridget was an excellent resource in moving the wellness program forward during her internship.

One (of many) accomplishments that impressed us was Bridget’s creation, launch, and promotion of a two-week step challenge. By encouraging DECC employees to be active, participants walked a total of 3,027,374 steps – approximately 1,514 miles. In two weeks! Is there anything this woman can’t do?

(Answer: No. Bridget is Superwoman.)

We asked Bridget to tell us about herself and her internship at the DECC. Read on for a fun Q&A.

Tell us your story!

My name is Bridget Faegre. I am from Duluth, MN and will be graduating from UMD in the Spring with a degree in Public Health. I love to be active. Some of my favorite things to do in my free time are to go camping, fishing, weight lifting, and spend time with my friends and family. I also just had a baby on November 3rd. His name is Grayson!

What has been your favorite project interning with DECC Wellness?

My favorite project interning with the DECC was working on the Employee Newsletters and creating a fitness challenge. I was able to research various health topics and I utilized my skills working with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

How would you define wellness?

My definition of wellness is being mentally, physically and emotionally healthy; on a scale that varies per individual.

What are some of your post-graduation plans, hopes and dreams?

My plans for after graduation are to move myself and my baby down to be with my boyfriend during the rest of his time in pilot training. After he is done, we will be located back in Duluth. I hope to find a Wellness Coordinating job because I have always been interested in wellness and working with others to help them better themselves.

Name one fun fact about you:

One fun fact about me is that I love trying new things. Whether it is food or doing a new activity, I am open to anything!

What do you recommend for employers interested in implementing a wellness program for their company?

I recommend knowing your priority population and figuring out what needs they have and want to improve, in order to implement a program to help fill those needs. Also, trying to implement new programs to change things up, but keeping them simple enough so everyone is able to participate.

The DECC Project Wellness is a comprehensive program for DECC employees to encourage overall wellness. The program consists of health-related challenges with incentives, team-building events, educational seminars, fitness classes, and an on-site gym. DECC Wellness is run by Wellness Coordinator Renae Matt, powered by a committee of volunteers, and enhanced with each new intern. Bridget was an integral component to the Fall 2019 wellness program through design, planning, and execution of our wellness challenges.
