Outside Our Back Door

The DECC is located on the shores of the largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Superior.  Our Harbor Side Convention Center overlooks the lake and Aerial Lift Bridge.  With amazing views from the floor to ceiling windows and our roof deck just a stone’s throw away from the harbor, we are spoiled by our magnificent surroundings.  Even on an extremely cold spring day, that beauty is still present.  Yesterday the first ship of the season left under the Aerial Lift Bridge.  With a vantage point from the Harbor Side Convention Center roof deck, we watched the Mesabi Miner leave the harbor and head to Marquette, Michigan, with her cargo of coal.  She will return to Duluth on Saturday, March 23, and reload with iron ore pellets.

MN FIRST Regionals Robotics Competition

The DECC will be host to the FIRST Lake Superior & Northern Lights Regionals robotics competition March 7-9, 2013.

Nearly 100 teams of high school students from several states will be competing with robots they have created to perform a set of tasks.  One of the teams includes our very own Duluth East Daredevils. Here is more about the event from the FIRST website.

Dubbed a varsity Sport for the Mind,™ FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real world” engineering as a student can get. Professional Mentors volunteer their time and talents to guide each team.

High-school students get to:
•Work alongside professional engineers.
•Build and compete with a robot of their own design.
•Learn and use sophisticated hardware and software.
•Develop design, project management, programming, teamwork, and strategic thinking skills.
•Earn a place in the Championship.
•Qualify for over $16 million in college scholarships.

Lake Superior Family FunFest

funfestThe tropics will be the theme at the 20th Annual Lake Superior Family FunFest at the DECC (Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center) this Saturday-Sunday, February 23-24, 2013.  “It’s Spring Break for many, but with work schedules and budgets not everyone is able to take that vacation to Florida or the tropics so we decided this year to bring that atmosphere to the Northland” said Tracy Lundeen, event producer.  “Leis, palm trees and tropical music will enhance the theme” he added.

FunFest attendees will be treated to a weekend of fun and exhibits including everything from music to sports, recreation, education, caricature drawings, face painting, cake walk, pampering and much more.  Most of the exhibits will be interactive.  Spiderman is scheduled to be on hand, FOX21 TV is bringing a green screen so attendees can get in front of a camera and be a meteorologist, a Le’ Salon will present a “kids spa’, Engwall’s Corn Maze will have their Box Maze in the exhibit hall, Zack “Jungle Boy” Walters and Al Sands will be there to “meet and greet” and do demonstrations, Kelvin Saline will do magic shows , there will be story reading by “Blue Water Bob, Champ from the UMD Bulldogs will be on hand, zoo animals from the Lake Superior Zoo, and many other fun things to see, do and experience.  “FunFest has always been a great cure for cabin fever. It’s an event for the entire family and a great way to break up the winter doldrums” said Lundeen.  “This is an event you can spend the entire day at.”

For many, the highlight, and perhaps most unique part, of FunFest is an over 25,000 square foot carnival midway in South Pioneer Hall.  Pioneer Hall is completely filled with carnival rides and games just like you see at a summer county fair but everything is inside.  This is the only presentation of its kind in Minnesota during the winter months and an enormously popular feature at FunFest.

FunFest admission is $6 at the door.  $1 off coupons are available by going to

Carnival rides are additional.  FunFest expo hours are Saturday 9AM to 4PM and Sunday 11AM to 4PM.  FunFest is also on facebook.  Just type in LakeSuperiorFamilyFunFest in the search bar.

A number of charities and organizations benefit from FunFest including Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, MS Society, Shiners, VCAP, Just Kids Dental and more.  FunFest is sponsored by Benna Ford Roush and Paper Capers .

Brides and grooms-to-be, from throughout the upper tri-state area, will be in the spotlight as Lundeen Productions presents the 25th Annual Duluth Bridal Show Saturday, January 12, from 10 am to 3 pm at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.  Since its modest beginning in 1989, the show has grown from twenty exhibitors and several hundred attendees to one of the largest bridal showcases in the upper Midwest.

This year’s bridal show, themed “A North Woods Wedding,” will feature nearly 150 exhibitors with a wide range of products and services ranging from gowns and tuxes to photographers, music and catering with plenty more in between.

“The Duluth Bridal Show is a planning tradition that really helps future brides and grooms navigate through almost anything they are going to need to plan their wedding and start out their new lives together,” says Tracy Lundeen, President of Lundeen Productions and show producer. “It’s also a social event that has a tremendous feel of anticipation, excitement, and fun having so many people under one roof planning the most special day of their lives,” he adds.

In addition to the exhibits, the Duluth Bridal Show features a runway fashion show that is one of the highlights of the event.
